Cruise ducks are small rubber ducks that passengers hide around a ship for other guests to find. Someone hides a duck behind a bar rail or on a lido lounger, another guest spots it, and a tiny moment of delight passes between two strangers who will probably never meet.

The tradition grew up entirely by word of mouth. There were no rules, no scorekeeping, and no way to know what became of a duck once you let it go. Most of the story was simply lost.

Our twist is a QR code. Every duck registered here carries one, and that code turns a one-off moment into a story that keeps going. The duck still gets hidden by hand and found by accident — the analog magic is the whole point — but now the chapters are kept.

A Duck Journey is the complete life story of one duck, written one chapter at a time. It opens when the duck is hatched and adds an entry for every Hide, Find, Keep and Rehide after that.

It is append-only. A new find never rewrites what came before — it is added underneath. That means the person who finds a duck on its ninth voyage can read all eight chapters that led there.

If a step goes unrecorded between recorded moments, it may appear in the Journey as Mystery Travel — an inferred step, not a recorded action. Sometimes that gap is the most interesting part of the story.

The QR code stays active forever, so the Journey has no end date. Ducks outlive the cruises they started on.

Deck Journey brings a hidden duck aboard the ship. On supported ships you can see which deck it is on and which zone — forward, midship or aft — so you know roughly where to start looking.

Zones are free for everyone. Anyone can see the deck and zone of a hidden duck without paying anything or creating an account.

That is deliberate. If unlocking a Pin broadcast the location, the first person to pay would end the hunt for everybody. Keeping it private is what keeps the hunt fair.

Map Journey zooms out from the ship. It places a duck's most recent pinned moment on the map — the port or place where its story last checked in.

Here is what that looks like for a single duck:

• Hatched at a kitchen table in Texas.
• Hidden aboard the ship in Galveston on embarkation day.
• Found by another guest two decks up, who logged the find and rehid it.
• Found again ashore in Cozumel and kept.
• Kept for a while, with its Journey waiting for the next recorded moment.
• Hidden again on a later cruise, where its Journey picks up again.

Every one of those recorded moments is a chapter on the same QR code. The duck did the traveling; the Journey did the remembering.

A Journey follows the duck, not the cruise line. The same duck can be hidden on a Carnival ship, found on Royal Caribbean, and kept after a Norwegian sailing — and it is still one continuous story. Princess, MSC, Celebrity and Disney work the same way.

Each cruise line sets its own policy on hiding items aboard, and those policies change. Always follow the current rules of the ship you are sailing. We track journeys; we do not speak for any cruise line.

Hide considerately:

• Stick to public areas where a guest could reasonably come across the duck.
• Never hide anywhere unsafe, restricted, or crew-only.
• Do not block, cover or interfere with equipment, signage or walkways.
• Leave it somewhere a child could safely reach without climbing.
